BRICS Opportunities and Challenges

This week in New Delhi, the 4th BRICS Leaders Meeting has brought together the top leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. These so-called "emerging economies" meet annually to discuss matters of mutual interest, ranging from current affairs and political events to economic cooperation and social exchange. Indeed, the experiences of these countries bear many similarities as they move forward on a path of development. Urbanization and industrialization bring great changes to a country's societal landscape, and while the economic end results are promising, such changes do not come without accompanying challenges. Through open cooperation, the BRICS countries hope to overcome these challenges more easily than they could on their own.

Although they are still in the midst of development, the BRICS countries have made their mark on the global economy, collectively representing around one-fifth of the world's GDP based on last year's figures. Perhaps even more impressively, these countries have demonstrated relatively strong economic performance amid the global recession. This has caused many to wonder if the world's economic center has begun to shift away from the West.

So what were the leading topics on the agenda for the 2012 BRICS Leaders Meeting in New Delhi? And does the future look bright for increased cooperation between these fast-growing emerging economies?

We talk to Sanjeev Srivastava, former editor of BBC India and now a freelance journalist based in New Delhi and Cheng Ruisheng, former Chinese ambassador to India.
