The Boao Forum for Asia, widely regarded as the tropical equivalent of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, hosts its annual conference in China's southernmost province of Hainan. The theme of this year's forum is "Asia in the Changing World: Towards Sound and Sustainable Development."

The Boao Forum's annual conferences have always been designed to reflect the dynamic changes taking place in Asia and beyond. In the past several years, Asia, with the robust growth of its emerging economies, surged out of the recession and propped up the world's economic recovery. But the continent is also confronted with its own problems.

In the last two years, inflation has been a headache for decision-makers from Beijing to New Delhi. This year, major Asian economies face the prospect of slowed growth. India's average quarterly GDP growth from 2000 to 2011 was 7.45 percent. However, in the fourth quarter of 2011, its growth fell to 6.1%. Similarly, China has set its GDP growth target at 7.5% for 2012, to make more room for economic rebalancing. Asia now needs to find an answer to a pressing question: how to maintain sound and sustainable development.

So how will the Boao Forum work to find solutions to the common problems facing Asia and the world at large? And what can Asian countries do to work toward closer integration and develop in a way that is both sound and sustainable?
