大学生村官难再就业
For college graduates who opt to serve China’s vast countryside as officials straight after finishing university, finding a job after their time as officials is not as easy as they expected, Banyuetan, or Bimonthly Forum, reported. An estimated 290,000 college graduates are fulfilling their contract as village officials. Despite preferential policies that aim at increasing their chances in the job market, many of them have been baffled since 2011 because they fail to find work. It had been 3 years since the policy was introduced to lead youth talents to countryside.
据《半月谈》报道，自2008年国家全面实施大学生村官政策以来，据不完全统计，目前在岗的大学生村官已达29万人之多。3年一道坎，虽然有就业方面的政策优惠，但是大学生村官在选聘期满后面临重新择业时不容乐观，2011年起这一问题开始显现。

[考公务员难]
Being a civil servant has been seen as a capital idea due to the preferential policies for the “graduate officials”, most of whom started their exit plan from the first day of their rural service with preparation for the civil servants selection exam under way. Despite often being the favored candidates, they still find it increasingly difficult to secure a slot in the administration system because fewer and fewer positions are reserved for them. They still have to compete for the most-coveted jobs.

Not all of them share the same idea. Some, though a small portion, opt to devote themselves to the countryside, but they backtrack from the reality. It’s difficult to secure a place on the staff payroll, and the meager income can’t sustain their lifestyle.
对于许多对农村怀有感情、想成就一番事业的大学生村官来说，留村任职在很大程度上也并不现实。事业编制很难争取，微薄的收入让生活难以为继。

[创业难深造难]
Few of them choose to build a start-up or go on to further education. Both experience and money can be obstacles of starting their own business. The government’s financial incentives are not enough to fuel their entrepreneurism. They do not seem to fancy the favorable treatment they are given, should they go back to school because they will still have to face the tough job market after graduation.

Britain’s government has touted the Olympics as a historic opportunity to showcase UK business and tourism. The Olympics would give Britain’s moribund economy a kick-start in the 3rd quarter, but given London is already one of the world’s top tourist destinations, lasting economic benefits from the influx of tourists would be inconsequential, according to a firm majority of economists from banks and research institutions.

US least green, least guilty

People in developing countries are making the most sustainable choices, while consumers in the rich nations have the least sustainable lifestyles, according to the Greendex report conducted by the National Geographic Society, foreign media reported. Indian consumers are the most conscious about their environmental footprint, accounting for a Greendex score of 58.9, followed by China (57.8) and Brazil (55.5), while the US was ranked the lowest with a score of 44.7. The Greendex report explored environmental attitudes and behaviors among 17,000 consumers in 17 countries.

Peugeot slashes 8,000 jobs

France’s largest carmaker PSA Peugeot Citroen shocked France Thursday with an announcement that it will cut 8,000 jobs in the country, AFP reported. Unions slammed the news as a “declaration of war”. Minister of Industrial Renewal Arnaud Montebourg said the government did not accept the plan. Peugeot shares tumbled to their lowest level in more than 20 years. The auto industry is a major employer in France, with job losses there having a knock-on effect on the wider economy.

US uniform made in China

US athletes at the forthcoming London Olympic Games will wear stylish uniforms designed by US label Ralph Lauren – but made in China, which has members of Congress fuming, ABC reported. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid slammed the US Olympic Committee (USOC) over the issue, saying officials “should burn” them. Reid said that China has already taken gold from America by manufacturing the uniforms Team USA will wear during the opening ceremonies.

China’s economy expanded 7.6% year-on-year in the 2nd quarter of 2012 – below 8% for the first time in 3 years, the National Bureau of Statistics said Friday. The figure, which marked the 6th consecutive quarter in decline, revealed the slowest growth pace since the 3rd quarter of 2009. According to preliminary statistics, the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew 7.8% year-on-year to nearly RMB22.71 trillion during the first half.
国家统计局13日发布的数据显示，初步测算，2012年上半年我国国内生产总值(GDP)为227098亿元，同比增长7.8%。其中，二季度同比增长7.6%，是3年来我国经济增速首次跌破8%。这已是经济数据连续第6个季度增速放缓，创2009年第3季度以来历史低点。

“The weakening GDP growth was mainly due to falling fixed-asset investment, difficult operations in domestic small and medium-sized enterprises and slackened external demand,” said Wang Jun, a researcher at the China Center for International Economic Exchange.

Astronauts meet media

Jing Haipeng, Liu Wang and Liu Yang, the 3-member crew of the Shenzhou IX spacecraft, met media in Beijing Friday morning, 2 weeks after their safe return to Earth, CCTV reported. The 3 astronauts are in good physical and mental condition, said Chen Shanguang, general director of the astronaut system. They have re-adapted to the Earth’s gravity and will receive training to recover their agility and strength as planned.

Fewer than 10% Greeks in a poll think that the rich in their country deserve their wealth, according to GlobeScan, a market-research company, The Economist reported. The research, which polled 12,000 people in 23 countries, found that Greece, followed by Russia and Turkey, have the fewest people agreeing with the concept. Australians are the most forgiving, with more than 60% people in favor, the research shows.

Desperate Chinese security firms are taking drastic measures to lure users, even if it means losing money. Kingsoft announced Wednesday that users would be insured for up to RMB8,000 for online shopping losses caused by phishing sites (钓鱼网站), Sohu IT reported. Qihoo 360, Kingsoft’s biggest competitor, followed suit and introduced its own e-commerce safeguard system which is said to reassure its users with an advanced compensation package worth up to RMB36,000 should they fall victim to e-commerce sites infected by a Trojan horse virus or phishing.

Online video rules tightened

Chinese Internet and broadcasting authorities have ordered intensified efforts to regulate online video content, including Internet dramas and microblog movies, after demanding cutbacks in TV entertainment and banning all TV stations airing commercials during TV dramas last year, Qianjiang Evening News reported. According to a circular jointly issued by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and the State Internet Information Office, online content providers were asked to closely examine their videos before making them available online for public viewing. The providers will be held responsible for the videos posted on their websites.

The per-capita disposable income of urban residents in 2011 reached RMB21,810, up 14.1% year on year, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics, chinanews.com.cn reported Thursday. Shanghai, Beijing and Zhejiang take the top 3 positions on the list of the per-capita disposable income. The figure from Shanghai stood at RMB36,230, more than twice the figure of RMB14,989 from Gansu at the bottom of the list. The disposable income of Hainan takes the largest growth rate at 17.9%.

An Australian study has found that middle-aged women who work longer are more likely to gain weight, The Daily Telegraph of London reported. The study, which examined more than 9,000 women aged 45 to 50, found those who worked long hours have less time to engage in physical activity and to prepare healthy meals. They are also far more likely to smoke, drink at unhealthy levels and sleep less, the study says.

The soccer star has been axed from his sponsorship deal with Coca Cola – after he swigged from a can of Pepsi during a press conference, The Sun reported. Ronaldinho will lose ￡1,000,000 in unpaid earnings after he was spotted with the rival firm’s drink as he spoke to journalists at his new club, Atletico Mineiro. The star’s ￡500,000-a-year contract with the drinks giant had been scheduled to run until 2014.
