Preview of the French Presidential Elections

This spring is a political season in France. The two-round presidential elections are set to be held in late April and early May.In this year's race, incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy will face nine political opponents in the first-round election. Although Sarkozy is expected to make it through to the second-round, polls have suggested that Fran?ois Hollande of the Socialist Party will be the race's strong contender.

The elections have come at a time of economic difficulty in Europe. As a result, the outcome of the French elections will have implications for both France and its neighbors. As the euro-zone's second-largest economy, France has an important role to play in getting the euro back on its feet. However, as growth lags behind a rising deficit, the French economy has begun to show signs of internal strain. If this situation worsens, it could have serious consequences for the future of the euro.

Recent events have also brought attention to France's social issues. The shootings in Toulouse at the end of March led some to speculate whether the national crisis would turn the election in Sarkozy's favor.

So what are the positions of the leading candidates on the issues most important to French voters? And what are the expectations of France's euro-zone partners in the run-up to the elections?
