Bad timing for iPad sale
新iPad失入华最佳时机?
Apple released its newest iPad in China Friday after settling a lawsuit over the ownership of its name with Shenzhen Proview Technology Ltd, chinanews.com reported. However, analysts say the new iPad has missed the best chance to enter the Chinese market over the long-standing but predictable trademark infringement tussle. According to a survey of over 600 respondents by a tech media company Thursday, when asked if they would buy the authorized new iPad, 526 people, or 84% of the respondents gave a negative answer, and only 59 respondents (9%) said they would buy the product.

A man was shot dead by police Thursday night at a subway station in Beijing after he took hostage a female security inspector at the station and attempted to hurt her with a knife, local authorities said, xinhuanet.com reported. The hostage was rescued. The incident happened at the Hujialou Station on Subway Line 10. An investigation into the man’s identity is under way.

A prestigious primary school in Beijing took students to the US for a summer exchange and performing tour, with, perhaps surprisingly, the famous gambling capital Las Vegas on its schedule, Beijing Evening News reported. Ms Yi, one of the parents, said that this 10-day program cost more than RMB30,000. Many parents doubt whether this kind of exchange program is for children to “open their minds” or simply for the teachers to have fun. Recently a hot micro-blog post also caused a stir, showing students from a Beijing primary school sitting outside a US shopping mall and eating hamburgers, while their teachers were shopping in brand stores.

Amazon.cn’s snail delivery

Amazon.cn, Amazon’s Chinese online store, has launched what is being dubbed a snail delivery service which allows 4-7 working days for delivery. According to the policy, if consumers order more than RMB99 worth of Amazon.cn’s goods, they can choose the option of free delivery within 4-7 days and an extra RMB3 discount, Beijing Business Today reported Friday. At present, the service is only available in Shanghai and Harbin. Amazon.cn’s move comes at a time when domestic e-tailers are counting on faster delivery as an important measure to boost sales. The user experience the snail delivery service creates may help enhance user stickiness, analysts say.

Hundreds of emails purportedly written by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad show he sent several sexist or irreverent messages in the months before the start of the ongoing Syrian uprising, AFP reported. The emails, released by WikiLeaks, give a glimpse into Assad’s puerile (幼稚的) and slightly misogynistic (厌恶女人的) mindset. “Wife: I wish I was a newspaper, so I’d be in your hands all day,” begins one of the jokes in an email. “Husband: I too wish that you were a newspaper, so I could have a new one everyday.”

Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing has kicked off a succession plan to transfer control of his empire to his eldest son Victor Li, who has started to take control of the HK$850b Cheung Kong group after an asset transfer, Hong Kong Economic Times reported. Victor Li now holds 2/3 of Li Ka-shing Unity Holdings Ltd after his younger brother Richard Li transferred his 1/3 holding in the family trust to him on July 16, according to a filing at the Hong Kong stock exchange. Li Ka-shing will continue to hold the remaining third of the trust, which controls Cheung Kong (Holdings) Ltd, Hutchison Whampoa Ltd and other affiliate companies.

Which is the laziest country worldwide? The answer would be Malta. The island state located in the central Mediterranean has 72% of adults classified as physically inactive. Brian topped the list in Europe with 63%, a Brazilian study found, The Daily Telegraph of London reported. Adults in these countries are failing to undertake at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise 5 times a week. The study which examined 122 countries, also found 1/3 of adults across the world and 4 in 5 teenagers are physically inactive.

2nd-tiered cities get popular
海归创业’逃离北上广’
“Fleeing 1st-tiered cities” is not a trend confined to the average young person any more. It began expanding to the elite group who came back home after going abroad for education, chinanews.com reported. This group of talented people are shifting the base for starting business from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, to inland regions as well as small and medium-sized cities, according to a blue paper on people who had studied abroad, which was released Monday in Beijing. The blue paper said the elites chose to leave 1st-tiered cities because of the fierce competition there. They also needed more capital to start businesses in the big cities where the support from local governments is limited.

Guizhou leads GDP growth

As of Sunday, 20 provinces and municipalities in China have released their semi-annual GDP data, China Business News reported. Guangdong continues to lead in terms of GDP value and the highest growth is found in Guizhou with 14.5% year-on-year. The lowest GDP growth was recorded in Beijing with 7.2%. A 10% growth rate has become the dividing line between western regions and eastern regions of China for growth figures. According to the data released so far, provincial GDP growth in central and western regions exceeds 10%, while the rates are below 10% in most eastern regions, except for Tianjin and Fujian, which recorded growth of 14.1% and 11.4%, respectively.

Xiao Jie was Monday elected the first mayor of the newly established Sansha city in the 1st session of the 1st Sansha Municipal People’s Congress, chinanews.com reported. Xiao was born in Leizhou, Guangdong in 1960 and joined the CPC in 1984. He is a member of 5th Standing Committee of Hainan CPC, and the head and secretary of the Party Committee of Provincial Agriculture Department. Xiao says he will focus on environmental protection and people’s livelihoods after taking office.

HK to invest in drainage

The Hong Kong government announced in a public document a plan to invest HK$1.06b in a flood storage pond to store storm water temporarily during peak times of a rainstorm, Southern Metropolitan Daily reported. The storage tank will be built beneath Happy Valley, the city’s famous racecourse, with a water storage capacity of 60,000 cubic meters, or 24 Olympic-standard swimming pools to mitigate (缓解) the water logging in Wan Chai. The project is scheduled for completion by 2018.

Course on searching for alien

Edinburgh University plans to offer a course on the search for alien life in July, foreign media reported. Students who enrolled in the course will discuss how life survives elsewhere in universe, how Earth might deal with extraterrestrial contact and who might represent Earth in the event of extraterrestrial contact. Students will also learn photography, in order to take first-rate photos when contacting alien life in future.

She changed her daughter’s failing grade to a medical exception, and her son’s 98% to an even more impressive 99% using her knowledge of the district’s computer system and the superintendent’s password.

According to a study in the medical journal Pediatrics, infants living in households with dogs were healthier and had fewer ear infections than those without a dog, The Wall Street Journal reported. The study, based on 397 children who lived in rural and suburban parts of Finland, examined whether contact with dogs and cats during a baby’s first year offers any protection from respiratory tract infections, such as colds and resulting common ear infections. The study also shows that cats appeared to offer some protection, but the link wasn’t as strong.
