Japan gov’t to buy isles

The Japanese government has reached an agreement with the family, who claims to own the Diaoyu Islands, to buy 3 major islands in the chain at a price of 2.05b yen, Yomiuri Shimbun reported Wednesday. The deal, previously estimated at 500m yen, comes after Tokyo metropolitan government proposed a similar plan by raising donations. As Tokyo has already raised more than 1.4b yen, the Japanese government decided to rush the deal at a higher price.
据日本《读卖新闻》5日报道，日本政府已就”购岛”事宜与所谓”岛主”达成买卖协议，将以20.5亿日元(约合1.7亿元人民币)的价格正式”购买”钓鱼岛诸岛上的3座岛屿。此前，日政府”购岛”估价为5亿日元，后因东京都政府发起的”购岛”捐款已超过14亿日元，日政府遂决定先于东京都高价”抢购”岛屿。

Hu called for the US to resist trade protectionism and relax the regulations restricting hi-tech exports to China.

The national price supervision watchdog has begun a probe into the price war by 3 major online stores which occurred last month, Beijing News reported. The 3 retailers – 360buy, Gome and Suning – are all mainly famous for their electrical appliances. Preliminary investigations show that they increased their selling prices before offering a discount. In addition, the commitment of “zero gross profit” was not kept and goods showing out of stock in online stores actually were in stock. The watchdog says it was a fraud against consumers.

But an epidemic of overtreatment – too many scans, blood tests and procedures – is costing the US health care system at least $210b a year, according to the Institute of Medicine, as well as taking a human toll in pain, emotional suffering, severe complications and even death, The New York Times reported.

BMW has participated in this fashion trend and bicycles displayed in its Beijing “BMW Lifestyle” experience store are priced from RMB17,000 to RMB55,000.

Eight construction workers were injured and another one remained trapped after a furniture market under construction collapsed in Wuhan, Hubei at around 8 am Wednesday, Xinhua reported.

NASA invests in ninja plane

NASA has approved a $100,000 investment to allow for further development of a new type of aircraft called the supersonic plane concept, foreign media reported. The plane looks something like a 4-cornered ninja (忍者) throwing star with 2 sides that are extended out while the other 2 sides are far shorter.(See photo)

20 years ago, most Chinese found their spouse in a neighboring village or within the same city; but nowadays, long-distance marriages and even cross-border marriages are common. Xinhua says Chinese people are extending farther to look for a life partner. The longer distance marriage mirrors a more intensive social mobility, and will promote communication and integration between different cultures. However, it will also trigger new social problems such as the difficulty in caring for old parents.

China drops in WEF ranking

China’s competitiveness ranking dropped from the world’s 26th in 2011 to 29th this year, its first decline since 2005, said the Global Competitiveness Report 2012-2013 released by the World Economic Forum (WEF) Wednesday, xinhuanet.com reported. Among the other 4 BRICS economies, only Brazil, which ranked 48th this year, moved up from a year ago. South Africa, ranking 52nd, India at 59th, and Russia, 67th, also experienced small declines in their rankings among 144 economies in the world. Switzerland, for the 4th consecutive year, topped the rankings. Singapore, Finland and Sweden took second, third and fourth positions respectively.

Wang Lijun, Chongqing’s former vice mayor, has recently been charged with bending the law for selfish ends, defection, abuse of power and bribe-taking by the People’s Procuratorate of Chengdu City, Sichuan province, xinhuanet.com reported Wednesday. The municipal prosecuting body filed the charges against Wang, also former chief of Chongqing’s public security bureau, with the Chengdu City Intermediate People’s Court.

Data shows that the number of temporary or contract jobs added to the economy has been increasing for 9 consecutive quarters since the recession officially ended. Most young workers may be destined to either cycle through a number of temporary positions in search of better wages or resign themselves to juggling multiple low-wage jobs in order to support themselves. If economic mobility is a hallmark of the American Dream, then its days may be over. The “rags-to-riches” story is more often found in Hollywood than in reality, said the Pew Charitable Trusts.

World’s longest bus debuts

What’s being billed as the world’s longest bus has been revealed in Germany, the Daily Mail of London reported. The AutoTram Extra Grand features 3 hinged segments, seating for 256 passengers and a length of over 30 meters. Developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Traffic and Infrastructure Systems, the AutoTram will be tested on the streets of the city of Dresden soon. Beijing and Shanghai have placed orders for the vehicle, which costs about $10m per bus.

A US publisher in October will release a collection of popular blogs by Chinese writer Han Han, The Wall Street Journal reported. It’s Han Han’s first writings to be translated into English. The volume presents an overview of the social and political issues, both large and small, that have preoccupied him and much of China during the past few years. In an interview with the Journal, when asked what it feels like when he publishes a blog post, knowing that millions of people will read it moments later, the 29-year-old said “It makes me conscious that I need to check for typos first”.

Drug traffickers from Singapore who illegally cross the border have created a new tack in selling drugs in Malaysia, zaobao.com reported. They secretly set up drug dens and arsenals in local houses and provide a one package service. The traffickers will give free munitions and weapons, such as pistols, to drug dealers for self-defense if they purchase a certain amount of drugs. The combo package of “buy drugs, get guns free” has attracted a number of buyers, said the report.
