China’s nuclear power plans
我国3年内无内陆核电

China will not arrange any inland nuclear projects in the next 3 years, according to several plans on nuclear power safety passed Wednesday at an executive meeting of the State Council, presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao, Xinhua reported. The country will build a few nuclear projects in coastal areas which have undergone full argumentation during the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), according to the plans.
据新华社报道，国务院总理温家宝24日主持召开国务院常务会议，通过《核电安全规划》和《核电中长期发展规划》，确定”十二五”时期只在沿海安排少数经过充分论证的核电项目厂址，不安排内陆核电项目。

Japan pulls back from China

Almost a quarter of Japanese manufacturers are rethinking their investment plans in China and some may shift future production elsewhere after the spike in tensions between Asia’s 2 largest economies. The sentiments were expressed in a Reuters survey released Wednesday and in interviews conducted in recent weeks with executives in industries ranging from electronics to apparel manufacturing.

US to surpass KSA oil output

US oil output is surging so fast that the country could soon overtake Saudi Arabia as the world’s biggest producer, AP reported. The Energy Department forecasts that US production of crude and other liquid hydrocarbons will average 11.4m barrels per day next year. That would be a record for the US and just below Saudi Arabia’s output of 11.6m barrels. Citibank forecasts US production could reach 13m to 15m barrels per day by 2020, helping to make North America “the new Middle East”.

It is alleged that Trump will claim that the documents show the First Lady and the president were at one point in their 2 decades of marriage seriously considering splitting up. Trump has said he’ll release bombshell news about Barack Obama on Wednesday, and that it would “possibly” change the presidential race.

Discovery would have meant death by firing squad for Horace Greasley, but the risks run by his lover Rosa Rauchenbach were just as great. Having hidden her Jewish roots from the Nazis, she was an interpreter at the camp where he was held. The film is being produced by Straton Leopold, who was executive producer on Mission Impossible III.

China’s annual civil service recruitment program, which stops accepting applications at 6 pm Wednesday, will see up to 6,000 people competing for one extremely favored position while few or no one is applying for some less popular ones, cnr.cn reported. More than 140 State-level government agencies, affiliated public institutions and local branches aim to recruit about 20,800 people in 2013, nearly 3,000 more than this year.

China became the world’s top destination for foreign investment in the year’s first half, edging the US out of the top position for the first time since 2003, The Wall Street Journal reported citing the UN Conference on Trade and Development. China attracted $59.1b in foreign investment in the first 6 months while US FDI inflows reached $57.4b. Even if the US were to reclaim the top spot in the 2nd half, it underlines the shift in foreign investment flows, as foreign investment in developing economies matched flows to developed economies for the first time.

An American cemetery, Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium, Maryland, has adopted many feng shui elements to cater to an increasing number of Asian clients, The Baltimore Sun reported. Amy S Shimp, general manager at Dulaney Valley, who designed the project said Asian clients have always sought burial surroundings in keeping with their heritage and culture, especially for ones with topiary animals, pagodas, granite benches each etched with the name of an Asian country and its national flower, and altars to place offerings and burn incense.

A new survey by the Pew Research Center reveals that there’s a generation gap among e-book fans, AP reported. Readers under 30 prefer cellphones and computers while those over 30 like dedicated devices such as the Kindle. Among e-book users surveyed, between ages 16-29, more than half read one on a desktop or laptop and around 40% use a cellphone. Around 25% used an e-reader. Among respondents 30 and older, 46% preferred e-readers, and just 25% cellphones.

The offshore duty-free purchase limit for tourists in Hainan will be lifted from RMB5,000 to RMB8,000 from Nov 1, according to the Ministry of Finance.

Nokia unveiled the Lumia 510 Tuesday, its lowest priced Windows Phone with a retail price of $199, Bloomberg reported. The phone will start selling next month in the Asia-Pacific and South America regions, starting with India and China.

Ban joked that he felt overshadowed by the star and was a bit jealous. “Until 2 days ago someone told me I am the most famous Korean in the world. Now I have to relinquish that,” Ban said.

Giant ball rids landmines

It might look like a prop from the Star Wars films, but a giant ball, called Mine Kafon, has the potential to save thousands of lives. Like a giant clump of dandelion seeds (see photo), it is designed to be blown around in the wind detonating landmines in its path, the Daily Mail of London reported. Made simply of bamboo, iron and plastic, each one is relatively cheap to produce and can clear up to 4 bombs before being destroyed themselves. They are the brainchild of Massoud Hassani, who at the age of 14 fled war-torn Afghanistan.

The study also found the favorite activity for both the nation’s males and females was taking in the view with 47% of men and 54% of women citing it as their favorite hotel pastime.
