Well-heeled Chinese consumers are increasingly stepping up to buy made-in-the-USA products, especially shoes, the US-located Star Tribune reported. Both Allen Edmonds Shoes, a Minneapolis firm, and Red Wing Shoes are capitalizing on a Midwest export surge to China. Minnesota exports to China last year totaled $1.93b, up 89% from 3 years ago. “A $300 pair of shoes over here is $580 over there,” Paul Grangaard, CEO of Allen Edmonds Shoes, said in an interview. “A guy who makes $60,000 a year in China doesn’t spend it on an [expensive] home. They spend it on clothing and shoes.”

Superstorm Sandy, the most devastating storm in decades to hit the US, has killed at least 50 people and could cost nearly $50b in losses, foreign media reported. The storm plunged more than 8.2m people into darkness, more than 3m of them in New York and New Jersey. On Tuesday, US President Barack Obama described the destruction and loss of lives as “heartbreaking for the nation” and warned of further damage yet to come. “This storm is not yet over,” he added.

Recent reports on Google China’s registration of 18 related “.Zhongguo (Chinese characters)” domain names fuelled speculation that the search giant still has expectations in the Chinese mainland market and is even considering a comeback, according to the National Business Daily. The report says Google has registered domain names covering many of its products, including “google.Zhongguo”, “adsense.Zhongguo” and “nexus.Zhongguo”. Liu Yun, Vice President of Google Inc and President of Google China, also said recently China was a big advertising market and his senior executives are bullish on its prospects.

These changes “could provide an opening for cultivating certain varieties of bananas” at higher altitudes.

Following closely is Tangshan in Hebei province, with an average time of 13 minutes wasted in traffic jams. Smart roads to be built

The Netherlands will build smart highways from next year, foreign media reported. The roads will be fitted with power-saving lights which will gradually brighten as vehicles approach then switch themselves off after they pass. The roads also have special lanes which will allow drivers of electric cars to recharge their vehicles as they travel along them.
