In fact, the clock face of Big Ben has famously been shot in many films, but filming is not allowed inside the tower. So not all MPs are in favor of the plans, rebuking Parliament treating the symbol of their oldest democracy as a money-spinner as shameful.

Beijing tops traffic jams

A recent study found that residents in Beijing have longer commuting times than other city dwellers in the Chinese mainland, cnr.cn reported. It takes a commuter an average of 52 minutes to get to work in Beijing, with 14 minutes wasted in traffic jams, according to a study released Wednesday by the sustainable development strategy research group under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Following closely is Tangshan in Hebei province, with an average time of 13 minutes wasted in traffic jams. Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Shenyang, Taiyuan, Shijiazhuang, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Tianjin are also in the top 10 ranking.

China should consider adjusting its family planning policy, a government think tank report says, Xinhua reported. Researchers of the China Development Research Foundation suggest the government should gradually loosen the one-child policy over the next 3 years in regions where family planning has been strictly implemented. They also pointed out the aging population and the fact that China’s “demographic dividend” has already ended and will pose a severe challenge for the country’s development.

Smart roads to be built

The Netherlands will build smart highways from next year, foreign media reported. The roads will be fitted with power-saving lights which will gradually brighten as vehicles approach then switch themselves off after they pass. The roads also have special lanes which will allow drivers of electric cars to recharge their vehicles as they travel along them.

The move came after China’s State Administration of Cultural Heritage reiterated its objection to auctions of illegally exported Chinese relics. Bonhams said it never intended to offend Chinese people and felt sorry for the negative effect aroused in China.

The Seventh Plenary Session of the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) was held from Nov 1 to 4 in Beijing, Xinhua reported. The meeting reviewed and approved the investigation reports on Bo Xilai and Liu Zhijun’s cases submitted by the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. It endorsed a decision made by the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee to expel Bo and Liu from the CPC for severe disciplinary violations. It was also decided at the plenum that the 18th CPC National Congress will be convened on Nov 8 in Beijing.

The stubbornly monolingual US is predicted to see a huge growth in the number of bilingual speakers in the next generation, foreign media reported. Approximately 50% of European adults are bilingual, compared to only 9% of US adults, reports Scientific American. Another statistic shows that trend will change: 21% of US children speak another language, according to the US National Center for Education Statistics. One of the reasons for the phenomenon of a coming bilingual generation lies in the incredible mental advantages of being bilingual.

One prisoner per week on average has been freed by mistake from British jails, including murderers and sex offenders, alarming new figures reveal, the Daily Mail of London reported. Officials blamed the blunders on errors such as inmates having the same name, incorrect documents and wrongly calculated prison sentences. A staggering 369 prisoners have been released by mistake since 2005, according to figures released by the UK Ministry of Justice.

Google is set to release a physical version of Google Wallet, its electronic payment system, according to people familiar with the matter, Information Week reported. The Google Wallet Card is intended for circumstances when customers cannot use their software-based, mobile phone-bound Google Wallet, due to a merchant’s lack of support for near field communication (NFC) payments. The card can be used where major credit and debit cards are accepted.

Experimental teaching materials for Chinese traditional culture education in primary and middle schools have been published in Beijing. The textbook includes not only the classics of “The Analects of Confucius”, “Sun Tzu on Art of War” and “Tao Te Ching” but also essays on Peking Opera and Chinese tea culture, Guangzhou-based Yangcheng Evening News reported. Students needn’t sit for exams after studying these courses, which intend to help overall improvement, according to Zhang Jian, deputy head of the study project.

JP McDonalds to close stores

Reporting a decrease in sales, McDonalds Japan is planning to close 110 of its poor performing restaurants as of the beginning of 2013, Japanese media reported. “We’ve seen a drop in consumer spending after the March 11 earthquake in 2011. People dine out less frequently in an effort to economize,” the company said in a statement. McDonalds Japan posted figures showing that, from January to September this year, sales in stores had fallen by 2.2% compared to the same period last year, with a loss of 17.8% in total operating profits.

NASA announced a new service to help people around the world see the International Space Station (ISS) when it passes overhead. It will send an email or text message to those who sign up for the service on NASA’s website a few hours before they will be able to see the space station flying over their city. “It’s really remarkable to realize humans built an orbital complex that can be spotted from Earth by almost anyone looking up at just the right moment,” said William Gerstenmaier, NASA’s associate administrator for human exploration and operations. ISS is the 3rd brightest object in the sky after the Sun and Moon.

Belgium lets smuggler go

A Brazilian drug smuggler who was arrested at Belgium’s Brussels Airport has been released and returned to Brazil, as the police have no staff who can speak Portuguese and the smuggler cannot speak French. The smuggler’s lawyer said the man had to be released when it turned out that no interpreter was available, foreign media reported. The 25-year-old man’s luggage contained four kilos of cocaine.
