Banks respond to criticism
多家银行叫停全额罚息
Even if only RMB1 is left unpaid on your credit card bill, you would have to pay daily interest for the whole period the loan has been outstanding. This is what banks call “full penalty” and they have been bombarded by card holders. The good news is that some banks have begun to reform, Guangzhou Daily reported. The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China has long abandoned the policy. In addition, several banks including China Construction Bank, China Merchants Bank and China Minsheng Banking Corp Ltd are implementing a Tolerance Reimbursement policy. This means if only RMB10 or less is unpaid, the banks will not charge any interest and the odd amount will be automatically accumulated on to the next bill.

25 iPhone smugglers on trial
淘宝店涉走私25人受审
A former No 1 digital sales shop on Taobao, Lanyoushuma, was closed in April on suspicion of smuggling iPhones worth RMB500m. The suspected 25 smugglers belonging to 5 gangs have stood trial at the Shenzhen Intermediate Court, South Metropolitan Daily reported. They have reportedly smuggled more than 162,000 mobile phones, including iPhones, and avoided taxes of more than RMB54.8m.

Petraeus resigned from the CIA post last Friday because of an extramarital affair. But Senate Intelligence Committee chair Dianne Feinstein said Petraeus’ testimony to her committee will be limited to the Benghazi attacks. Petraeus was CIA director at the time of the attacks and visited Libya afterwards.

Japan PM dissolves parliament

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has dissolved the lower house of Japan’s parliament, paving the way for a general election likely to end his Democratic Party of Japan’s 3-year hold on power, AP reported. Noda followed through Friday on an earlier pledge to call elections after the opposition Liberal Democratic Party agreed to back several key pieces of legislation, including a deficit financing bill and electoral reforms. The Cabinet was expected to quickly announce elections for Dec 16.

Social media helps job hunt

Social networks have become a new channel for Chinese graduates to secure a job, xinhuanet.com reported Friday. A quarter of fresh graduates consider social networking sites as an important online source of information related to job researching, according to a recent survey on career objectives of students graduating in 2013 by Renren, a popular social networking site in China. The survey also finds that the Internet has overtaken campus and on-site job fairs to become the most commonly used channel to obtain recruitment information among these graduates. 80.5% of fresh graduates choose to get information about job openings through the Internet.

Modern technology has given us many amazing innovations and it’s easy to look down on our prehistoric ancestors. But a study by Stanford University geneticist Gerald Crabtree has found that evolution is, in fact, making us dumber and that human intelligence may have actually peaked before our hunter-gatherer predecessors left Africa, time.com reported Thursday. The reason? Life on the veldt (南非洲的草原) was tough, and prehistoric humans’ genes were constantly subjected to selective pressure in an environment where the species’ survival depended on it. For humans, that meant getting smarter, according to Crabtree.

NHK morning news program anchor Takeshige Morimoto (see photo) was arrested Wednesday for allegedly groping a woman on a train in Tokyo, Japanese media reported. Morimoto, 47, allegedly touched the breasts of a 23-year-old woman in a train when he was on his way home after drinking with colleagues. Morimoto was drunk when he was nabbed and said he didn’t remember touching her. NHK said it will look into the case and will take measures in a “severe manner” if Morimoto is found guilty.

Researchers from the University of Bonn in Germany have found that a hormone called “oxytocin (后叶催产素)” helps to prevent men in monogamous (一夫一妻制的) relationships from cheating on their spouses, Australian Associated Press reported. During the research, when men were given a dose of oxytocin nasal spray, they tended to keep a larger distance from attractive women than their counterparts. However, this “love hormone” seems not to work for single men. It is hoped that the hormone may be incorporated into drugs to keep men faithful to their wives in the future.

“Reset generation” refers to young people who, when a situation becomes difficult or burdensome, quit and start over again in a different situation.
Reset generation (重启一代) 指遇到复杂、难处理的情况时就选择离开，重新开始的年轻人。
This phrase was inspired by the “reset” feature that comes with most video or computer games. Choosing this feature gives the player a fresh start and is most often employed when the player gets into a mess from which he or she can’t or won’t escape.

New vessels join fleets

Two new 3,000-ton patrol vessels have started service in China’s marine surveillance, xinhuanet.com reported. Haijian 137 joined the Donghai fleet under the China Marine Surveillance (CMS) Wednesday. The vessel will soon begin its patrol mission in the East China Sea to safeguard the country’s sovereignty. Haijian 110 joined the CMS Beihai fleet and started its patrol mission in the Yellow Sea Monday.

Masato Kitera is reportedly a man with lots of connections and communication skills although he was majoring in French and lacks experience of living in China.

Women spend more time checking out other women than they do checking out men, keen to see what “the opposition” is wearing, what their hair looks like and how thin they are, according to a new study, the Daily Mail of London reported. Clocking other women’s shoes, height, cellulite (脂肪团), where their handbag is from and whether or not they have had plastic surgery is the usual thought process, the study found. Others check out women to see if they are thinner than them, while looking out for wedding rings is also on the checklist.
