RMB trades reach Europe

European enterprises can get clear benefits from adopting renminbi (RMB) denominated products and services in cross-border trade with China, reducing costs on exchange fees by as much as 5%, according to a report published by the City of London Corporation Thursday, xinhuanet.com reported. The case study report on RMB products and businesses shows that using RMB can reduce foreign exchange (FX) costs and risks; the lower cost of financing and conversion encourages the growth of existing business with trading partners in China, as Chinese companies would prefer to be paid in their own currency to remove FX risks.

Manager pay rising fast

In the 10 years from 2001 to 2011, senior management salaries in China rose 3.5 times, the fastest in the world, according to new research from global management consultancy, Hay Group, Bloomberg reported. Indonesia and Brazil ranked behind China with a growth of 3 and 2.8 times respectively. Fast growing emerging markets now deliver senior management pay levels on a par with those of their Western counterparts, the research said. In comparison, in the US and UK, senior management pay has risen by just 1.4 and 1.7 times respectively, and only twice as much across Western Europe as a whole.

The UN weather agency said the Arctic ice melt was one of a myriad of extreme and record-breaking weather events to hit the planet in 2012. Droughts devastated nearly 2/3 of the US as well as western Russia and southern Europe. Floods swamped West Africa and heat waves left much of the Northern Hemisphere sweltering.

A survey shows that the typical Brit spends ￡16.67 on a Christmas present for a grandparent compared to ￡32.65 for their mother. Meanwhile people spend ￡27.68 on their fathers. People lavish the most money on their own children, with ￡104.40 per child. After children, the second most money that people spend goes on their partner, with people typically spending ￡78.54 on their other halves.

Expectant parents who can’t wait to see what their baby will look like can now buy a 3D model of the fetus. The 9-cm resin model of their fetus, encased in a transparent block, is fashioned by a 3D printer after an MRI scan, according to Japanese firm Fasotec that offers the service, AFP reported. The “Shape of an Angel”, which costs $1,164, comes with a miniature version that could be a nice adornment for a mobile phone.

The US Senate approved Thursday an amendment (修正案) to specify the Diaoyu Islands as an applicable object within Article V of the Japan-US Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security, kyodonews.jp reported. The amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013 states that “while the US takes no position on the ultimate (最终的) sovereignty (主权) of the Diaoyu Islands, it does acknowledge the administration of Japan over the Islands”. The report said the move was aimed at containing China.

The Internet has been a strategic weapon for both the rebels and the regime of President Bashar Assad, letting activists organize and communicate but also exposing them to surveillance(监视), according to The New York Times. The Syrian government and the opposition each blamed the other for the blackout.

The education systems in Finland, South Korea and Hong Kong are ranked the top 3 in the world, followed by Japan and Singapore, according to a global league table published by education firm Pearson, the BBC reported. The UK ranks 6th and the US is in 17th place. The rankings combine international test results and data such as graduation rates between 2006 and 2010. Successful countries and regions give teachers a high status and have a “culture” of education, says Michael Barber, Pearson’s chief education adviser.

Asians dominate tech jobs

The percentage of Asian tech workers grew from 38.7% in 2000 to 50.1% in 2010 in the Bay Area (旧金山湾区). At the same time, white workers saw their 50.9% majority of tech jobs in 2000 fall to 40.7%. Positions held by African-American tech workers fell from 2.8% to 2.3%; while those held by Hispanic workers dropped from 4.6% to 4.2%.

More university instructors are allowing students to voice opinions via their micro blogs in class discussion. “I have more than 7,000 fans on my micro blog, and discussion online makes the class more lively,” said Lei Wuming, director of the Development and Education Psychology Institution at Wuhan University of Technology. Su Ying, 19, a sophomore, said: “I feel more relaxed voicing my opinion online than standing up to make a speech in class.”

China’s PMI rises to 50.6%

China’s manufacturing activity saw an increase for the 3rd straight month in November, official data showed, xinhuanet.com reported. The purchasing managers’ index (PMI) rose to 50.6% in November, from 50.2% in October, hitting a 7-month high, according to data released by the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP). The November index indicated that the economic recovery continues to gain momentum.

Guns stolen from navy vessel

An intruder stole a cache of weapons from an Australian navy patrol vessel Friday night after overpowering a seaman, in a security breach the military described as “concerning”, AFP reported. “Two pump-action shotguns and 12 pistols were stolen by the intruder, who was wearing military-style clothing and who they said ‘appeared to have good knowledge of the vessel’,” the Australian Department of Defense said in a statement.
