Leaders of China, Russia hail nuclear energy cooperation

The leaders of China and Russia are hailing nuclear energy cooperation between the two countries.

President Xi Jinping and President Vladimir Putin have attended a groundbreaking ceremony for a bilateral nuclear energy cooperation project via video link.

The ceremony was held to mark the first day of construction of power units No. 7 and 8 of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant in Jiangsu, and No. 3 and 4 at the Xudapu Nuclear Power Plant in Liaoning.

Xi Jinping stressed that the bilateral cooperation on nuclear energy is meaningful for the high-level development of the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era.

Dong Xue reports from the city of Lianyungang, where the launching ceremony was held.

She explains the significance of the project.


China's Tianwen-1 probe sends back Mars landing visuals

China has released two photos and two videos captured by its Mars probe Tianwen-1 during and after the country's first landing on the red planet.

The first photograph shows that a ramp on the lander has been extended to the surface of Mars.

The terrain of the rover's forward direction is clearly visible in the image, and the horizon of Mars appears curved due to the wide-angle lens.

In the second image, the rover's solar panels and antenna are seen unfolded, and the red soil and rocks on the Martian surface are clearly visible.

Meanwhile, a released video shows how the lander and the rover separated from the orbiter during landing.


China slams U.S. call for diplomatic boycott of Beijing Winter Olympics

China is calling on certain U.S. politicians to stop making use of the Olympic Games and playing "political tricks."

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the remarks after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for a boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics, citing so-called human rights abuses.

Calling it a typical U.S. farce, the spokesperson noted that the politicization of sports violates the spirit of the Olympic Charter and harms the interests of athletes from all countries and the international Olympic cause, which is opposed by the international community.


Global trade sees record recovery

Global trade saw a record recovery from the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic in the first quarter of this year.

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development says trade volume in the period rose 10 percent year on year and four percent from the previous quarter.

Meanwhile, in its quarterly Global Trade Update, the Geneva-based UN body says the trade recovery remained uneven worldwide.

Exports of economies in East Asia recovered much faster while other developing countries' trade restored slowly.

Among major economies, China's exports continued to grow strongly and exceeded its pre-epidemic level.


Louvre Museum reopens

The famous Louvre Museum has re-opened.

Tourists and Parisians were queueing early Wednesday morning to be the first to get inside.

"It means a lot. That means the COVID-19 starts to finish, when it's opening all the museums and all the public areas. That's good for us."

"Maybe I didn't really miss it, but we are happy it's reopening. It's a stage, a change in everyday life."

Museums, cafés and restaurant terraces were reopening Wednesday after six months of pandemic shutdown.

But museums must guarantee eight square meters of space per visitor.


China to open CPC museum

The Museum of the Communist Party of China (CPC) is set to open soon in Beijing.

From June, it will host an exhibition on the history of the CPC, one of the events held in museums across China to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Party.
