Xinjiang's population increases 18.5 pct over past decade

Official data shows that the combined population of all Chinese ethnic minorities in Xinjiang stood at nearly 15 million as of October 2020.

This represents an increase of more than 1.8 million, or over 14 percent, in 10 years.

There are over 11.6 million Uygur people in the region, making up 45 percent of Xinjiang's total population.


Guangzhou postpones high school entrance exam over COVID-19

The high-school entrance examination in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province has been postponed because of COVID-19. 

New dates for the tests originally scheduled for June 20-22 will be set depending on the coronavirus situation.

More than 90,000 junior high school students are set to take part in the exam.


Stray single elephant shows no sign of rejoining migrating herd

The male elephant that broke free from its herd in Yunnan Province is showing no sign of rejoining the main group.

The lone elephant has been lingering in the provincial Kunming for over a week. It's now some 16 kilometers away from the others which have been staying in Nanshan Village. 

Some experts say that the main herd may be waiting for their companion.


2 Americans plead guilty to helping ex-Nissan chief Ghosn flee Japan

Two Americans have pleaded guilty to charges of helping former Nissan Motor Chairman Carlos Ghosn flee Japan in 2019.

Michael Taylor and his son Peter admitted that they smuggled the auto tycoon out of Japan so he could avoid trial for charges of financial misconduct. 

Prosecutors said the father-and-son team were paid 1.3 million U.S. dollars and could be facing jail terms of up to three years.

Ghosn is accused of under-reporting his remuneration for years and for embezzling company funds.


Safe to mix AstraZeneca and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines: WHO experts

The World Health Organization says that combining different COVID-19 vaccines is a feasible option to fast-track vaccination efforts.

Preliminary studies in Spain, Britain and Germany with an AstraZeneca first dose followed by a Pfizer vaccine proved to develop levels of protection as high as two doses of Pfizer.

Sports comedy "Never Stop" tops Chinese box office

Domestic sports comedy "Never Stop" led the Chinese box office chart on Sunday with a revenue of 31.6 million yuan, or about 5 million U.S. dollars. 

The movie is about how a runner struggles after his retirement before emerging from the setbacks again. 

Its box office earnings is followed by U.S. animated adventure comedy "Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway", which raked in just under 25 million yuan.
