Xi congratulates Nguyen Xuan Phuc on re-election as Vietnamese president

Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent a congratulatory message to Nguyen Xuan Phuc on his re-election as Vietnam's state president.

Xi Jinping says he attaches great importance to the development of China-Vietnam relations and is ready to work with Vietnamese leaders to strengthen strategic guidance on bilateral relations in the new era.

The 15th National Assembly of Vietnam on Monday re-elected Nguyen as the state president for the 2021-2026 period.


China puts forward two lists during talks with visiting U.S. deputy secretary of state

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng says China has put forward two lists to the United States following the talks with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman in Tianjin.

He says one is the List of U.S. Wrongdoings that Must Stop and the other is the List of Key Individual Cases that China Has Concerns with.

China urged the United States to address those cases as soon as possible and protect the legitimate interests of Chinese citizens and institutions in the United States.


US should not seek cooperation at expense of China's interests: FM spokesman

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian says the United States should not seek cooperation at the expense of China's interests.

The spokesperson says senior diplomats of the two countries had in-depth exchanges of views on a wide range of issues in Tianjin.

He says the U.S. side sought China's cooperation and support on climate change, the Iranian nuclear issue, and the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula among others.

Zhao says China has been playing a responsible and constructive role on these issues.

He says cooperation should be carried out on the basis of mutual trust and mutual benefit, adding that a good atmosphere for bilateral relations is a necessary condition.


Typhoon In-Fa makes second landfall in east China

Typhoon In-Fa has made the second landfall in the coastal waters off east China's Zhejiang Province.

The typhoon started to wreak havoc in Zhejiang on Saturday, bringing heavy downpours, strong gales and floods.

Zhejiang has upgraded its emergency response to the highest level.

Over 1.5 million people across the province have been evacuated to safe places.

The province of Jiangsu and the city of Shanghai are also bracing for the Typhoon with emergency response measures.


Flood-hit Henan braces for new round of downpour

A new spell of heavy rain is expected to lash the flood-ravaged province of Henan in central China from Monday to Thursday.

So far, torrential rain has caused 69 deaths and affected millions of people in the province.

Five people remain missing.

Local authorities say six bodies were found after a five-day search operation in a road tunnel in the provincial capital Zhengzhou. A total of 247 vehicles were pulled out from the tunnel.


China reports 40 new local COVID-19 cases

China reported 40 new local COVID-19 cases on Sunday.

39 were registered in Jiangsu Province, and the other one was in Liaoning.

A second round of city-wide nucleic acid testing is underway in Jiangsu's capital Nanjing, after infections linked to an airport were discovered last week.


Civilian casualties in Afghanistan reach record high in first half of 2021: report

A UN report says the number of civilian casualties in Afghanistan has reached a record high as the conflicts continue to escalate.

It says killings and injuries have increased sharply since May when international military forces began their withdrawal and the fighting intensified following the Taliban's offensive.

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan says over 1,600 civilians were killed and more than 3,200 civilians were wounded in conflicts in the first six months of the year.

The figures represent a 47-percent increase in overall civilian casualties compared with the same period last year.

The report says women and children made up nearly half of the total number of civilian casualties in the first half of this year.
