S Africa: tourism from Brics on the rise



Many of South Africa’s economic indicators have lagged recently on Europe’s downturn. And China’s economic slowdown could also take its toll on sub-Saharan exports to China.
 
南非的许多经济指标近期因欧洲经济低迷而趋软。而中国经济增长放缓也可能打击了撒哈拉以南非洲对华出口。 

But one indicator is up for Africa’s largest economy: tourism. And specifcally from the Bric nations.

China, for instance, has become South Africa’s fourth biggest overseas tourism market, up 56 per cent on 2011 figures. 

例如,中国已成为南非的第四大旅游客源国,与2011年相比游客人数增长56%。 

According to the South Africa department of tourism, President Jacob Zuma announced on Thursday that nearly a million international tourists visited the country last year, 10.2 per cent more than in 2011 – a rise from 8.3m to 9.2m. 

南非旅游局提供的消息称,总统雅各布•祖马(Jacob Zuma)周四宣布,去年到访南非的海外游客增加近100万,比2011年多出10.2%(从830万增至920万)。 

Europe remains the highest source of overseas tourists to South Africa, growing by 9.5 per cent and attracting more than half the total number of overseas tourists. The number of UK tourists, South Africa’s biggest overseas tourism market in 2012, was 4.2 per cent up with 438,023 visitors in 2012. 

欧洲仍是南非的最大旅游客源市场,游客人数增长9.5%。在前往南非的海外游客中,欧洲人占一半以上。英国是2012年南非最大的旅游客源国,全年游客人数达到438023人,同比增加4.2%。 

The US is South Africa’s second biggest overseas tourism market; Germany is in third place. Both are up as well, increasing by 13.6 per cent and 13 per cent, respectively. 

美国是南非的第二大旅游客源国;德国位列第三。2012年这两国的游客人数分别增加13.6%和13%。 

But the biggest improvement is in South Africa’s fellow Brics nations – as Zuma explained:"A few years ago we took the decision to begin actively marketing destination South Africa in emerging markets, which has yielded extremely positive results. Since 2009 arrivals from China have more than tripled, arrivals from Brazil have more than doubled and arrivals from India have almost doubled."

China has jumped from being South Africa’s eighth largest overseas market in 2011 to its fourth in 2012 – over 130,000 people visited South Africa from China, a 56 per cent increase. The growth was driven in part by the opening of a direct Beijing-Johannesburg flight last January. 

2011年,中国是南非的第八大旅游客源国,但在2012年一跃成为第四大旅游客源国——全年逾13万中国游客访问南非,同比增长56%。这一增长在一定程度上得益于去年1月开通的北京-约翰内斯堡直飞航班。 

Growth in arrivals from India continued in 2012, with over 100,000 Indian visitors to South Africa, up 18.2 per cent, making it South Africa’s eighth largest overseas tourist market. Brazil for the first time moved up to ninth, with the number of tourists rising 45 per cent on 2011. 

2012年,来自印度的游客人数继续增长,逾10万印度游客访问南非,同比增长18.2%,使印度成为南非的第八大旅游客源国。巴西首次升至第九位,前往南非的游客人数比2011年增加45%。 

Given the boost in figures, South Africa should see a benefit in tourism jobs, if past experience is anything to go by. The more modest growth in toursit numbers from around 8m in 2010 to 8.3m in 2011 led to an extra 31,000 tourism jobs in a sector that employs nearly 600,000. 

如果以往的情况可作参考,游客人数的增加意味着南非应会在旅游业就业方面受益。从2010年至2011年,到访南非的游客人数小幅增加,即从大约800万增至830万,但已使旅游业增加了3.1万就业岗位。目前,南非旅游业总就业人数达到近60万。 

Spending by tourists from the Americas, Asia and Australia, as well as Europe, has increased, the tourism department said. But there was one less positive note: overall spending is down 2.3 per cent per tourist, partly due to the slightly shorter average visit, which is now 7.6 nights, down from 8.5 in 2011. 

南非旅游局表示,美洲、亚洲和澳大利亚以及欧洲游客的支出都有所增加。但也有一个不那么积极的数据:平均每个游客的总支出下降2.3%,这在一定程度上是由于平均访问时间略有缩短,从2011年的8.5晚减至2012年的7.6晚。
