Dear friends,

很高兴以视频方式来到“天使之城”洛杉矶，参加中美电影节、电视节开幕式暨“金天使”奖颁奖典礼。中美电影节、电视节历经二十载，为深化中美影视合作、促进两国人文交流搭建了有益平台，两国优秀电影人共聚一堂，8000多部优秀影片在此展映，本身就是百花齐放春满园的生动写照。

It is a great pleasure to join you via video link in Los Angeles, “the City of Angels”, for the opening ceremony of the Chinese American Film Festival (CAFF) and the Chinese American TV Festival (CATF) as well as the “Golden Angel” Award Ceremony.

Over the past two decades, the Chinese American Film Festival and the Chinese American TV Festival have served as a valuable platform for deepening bilateral film and TV cooperation and promoting people-to-people exchanges between China and the United States. Leading filmmakers from both countries have been brought together, and over 8,000 cinematic masterpieces have been screened here, showcasing the rich diversity of our two cultures.

电影是光影的艺术、现实的镜子，也是文明交流互鉴的载体、人民相知相近的桥梁。电影可以沟通世界，从128年前“西洋影戏”首次在上海徐园放映，到70年前周恩来总理在日内瓦邀请卓别林观看东方的“罗密欧与朱丽叶”——中国第一部彩色戏曲电影《梁山伯与祝英台》；从《泰坦尼克号》《变形金刚》等好莱坞大片广受中国观众欢迎，到《流浪地球》《热辣滚烫》等中国优秀影视作品闪亮北美银屏，一部部电影以独特的艺术魅力展现各国社会风貌和人文底蕴，打开了中国与世界相互了解的窗口。电影能够连接心灵，《冰雪奇缘》热映时，不少中国小朋友装扮成女主角爱莎，一起高唱主题曲《随它吧》；《功夫熊猫》上映时，不少美国小朋友怀抱熊猫玩偶走进影院、同阿宝一起踏上冒险旅程，一部部电影以独特的视听语言跨越地域、文化的差异，架起人民相知相近的桥梁。

Film is an art of light and shadow, and a mirror of the reality. It is also a medium for exchanges and mutual learning among cultures, and a bridge that brings people closer. Film has the power to connect the world. 128 years ago, the first-ever screening of what locals called “Western shadow plays” debuted at the Xu Garden, Shanghai. In 1954, Premier Zhou Enlai invited Sir Charlie Chaplin to watch the first color film of the People’s Republic of China in Geneva — The Butterfly Lovers, also known as the Chinese Romeo and Juliet. Today, Hollywood blockbusters such as Titanic and Transformers are hugely popular among the Chinese people, while outstanding Chinese films like The Wandering Earth and YOLO also shine on American screens. With their unique magic, films enable China and other countries to better know each other’s society, history and culture.

Film also has the power to connect hearts. Fascinated by Frozen, many Chinese kids dressed themselves up as Elsa and learned to sing “Let it Go”. And when Kung Fu Panda was showing, American children went to the cinema with panda plushies and embarked on an adventure together with Bao. With their unique language, films help our peoples reach out to each other across geopolitical and cultural divides.

作为世界前两大电影市场，中美影视合作卓有成效、前景广阔。中国积极引进反映世界优秀文明成果的优质电影，今年前9个月，中国院线上映美国影片34部、票房达48亿元。中共二十届三中全会明确提出，将完善高水平对外开放体制机制，推动文化、电信、互联网等领域有序扩大开放，将为各国优秀文化产品提供巨大市场机遇。中国有悠久历史和灿烂文化，提供了取之不尽、用之不竭的故事素材和艺术资源；中国有14亿观众、14000家影院、88000块银幕的超大规模电影市场，去年近13亿人次走进影院、票房达77.5亿美元，电影业生机勃勃、潜力无双。美影视产业已有百年历史，在资金投入、制作技术、宣传营销等方面有独特优势。中美完全可以取长补短、优势互补，共同迎接新技术带来的新课题，共同呈现满足人民精神文化需求的好电影。很高兴看到，不少美国电影借“中国元素”大获成功，双方在联合拍摄、互办影展、人才培养等方面开展了卓有成效的合作，不仅增进了人民间的相互理解与友谊，也促进了两国影视产业繁荣。

China and the United States are the world’s top two film markets. Our film and TV cooperation has yielded fruitful outcomes and enjoys bright prospects. China has been actively introducing high-quality films reflecting the best of world civilizations. In the first nine months of this year, 34 American films were screened in China, grossing $674 million US dollars. As planned at the third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, China will further improve the institutional framework for high-standard opening-up, and open up wider sectors including culture, telecommunications and the internet in an orderly way. This will unleash tremendous market opportunities for high-quality cultural products from around the world.

China’s time-honored history and splendid culture provide an enduring treasure trove for storytelling and artistic creation. Also, China has a huge film market with 1.4 billion audience, 14,000 cinemas and 88,000 screens. Last year alone, nearly 1.3 billion tickets were sold, generating $7.75 billion US dollars in box office revenue. Our film industry is brimming with ever-growing vitality and has unparalleled potential.

Meanwhile, the American film and TV industry has developed for a century, building distinct strengths in funding, production technology, promotion and marketing. Therefore, our two countries can well draw upon each other and complement one another, jointly tackle challenges brought by new technologies, and produce films that better appeal to our peoples.

It is heartening to see that Chinese elements have contributed to the success of a number of American films. Our productive cooperation on co-production, film festivals and personnel training has not only enhanced mutual understanding and friendship between our two peoples, but also boosted our film and TV industries.

各位朋友，

Dear friends,

“一千个人眼中有一千个哈姆雷特。”妖魔化彼此，就会草木皆兵、风声鹤唳，陷入敌意相互催化的恶性循环；正确认识彼此，才能找到中美相互尊重、和平共处、合作共赢的正确相处之道。80多年前，美国记者斯诺奔赴中国延安，将自己的所见所闻忠实介绍给世界，为增进中美相互了解倾注了毕生心血；今年6月，中美历时三年合拍的纪录片《斯诺•未竟之路》完成拍摄，再现了坚守客观真实、摒弃意识形态偏见的斯诺精神。人民既是历史的“剧中人”、也是历史的“剧作者”，中美关系的根基由两国人民浇筑、中美关系的未来也将由两国人民创造。期待中美影视界涌现更多“新时代的斯诺”，贡献更多展现真实立体全面中国、讲述中美友好合作故事的经典佳作。预祝第二十届中美电影节、中美电视节取得圆满成功！

“There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes.” If we demonize each other, we would be preoccupied by paranoia and caught in a spiral of enmity. But when we perceive each other correctly, we will find a right path for China and the United States to get along based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation. Over 80 years ago, American journalist Edgar Snow travelled all the way to Yan’an, shared the true story about China to the world, and dedicated his whole life to helping our two countries better understand each other. In June this year, the China-U.S. co-produced documentary Snow: The Unfinished Journey was completed after three years of joint efforts, paying tribute to the Snow spirit of holding on to the truth and rejecting ideological biases.

The people are both the protagonists and screenwriters of history. The foundation of the China-U.S. relationship was laid by our peoples, and its future will be created by our peoples. I hope there will be more Edgar Snows of the new era in the film and TV industry of our two countries, who will present a true, multi-dimensional and panoramic view of China and tell the stories of China-U.S. goodwill and cooperation to the world.
