Remarks by H.E. Ambassador Xie Feng at the “ShanghaiEye Night” Events

女士们，先生们，

Ladies and gentlemen,

很高兴和大家欢聚一堂，共同出席“共鸣未来——ShanghaiEye之夜”中美人文交流暨“魅力上海”城市形象推广系列活动。就在几天前，习近平主席对美国进行具有里程碑意义的国事访问，两国元首共同为中美关系发展提供新的指引。今晚的活动高度契合两国元首会晤共识，充分展现中美文化交流的蓬勃生机。我谨对活动的成功举办表示热烈祝贺，向为此付出努力的各界朋友致以衷心感谢！

It gives me great delight to join you at the "Future Resonance — ShanghaiEye Night" China-U.S. people-to-people exchange events, which are also part of the "Shanghai Let's Meet" city promotion initiative.

A few days ago, President Xi Jinping paid a milestone state visit to the United States, during which the two heads of state jointly provided new guidance for the development of China-U.S. relations. In alignment with the common understandings reached between the two Presidents, the gala tonight testifies to the vibrant cultural exchanges between our two countries. So first of all, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations on the success of this event, and also express sincere gratitude to all friends who have made this possible!

在今晚活动中，我有几点感触，愿同大家分享。

Today, I wish to share a few personal observations with you:

其一，文化有源，交流无界。刚才中美艺术家同台献技，可谓珠联璧合，相映生辉。中美历史文化不同，但这不是疏远彼此的理由，而是美美与共的动力。就像One Voice合唱团所唱的，只要你我彼此看见，风浪都无法将我们阻隔。习近平主席高度重视中美人文交流，在“5年5万”倡议提前实现目标的基础上，宣布“5年10万”新举措。上海是中美友好往来的重要纽带，上海广播电视台是中美文化传播重要桥梁，马里兰州是中美地方交往典范和“匹克球外交”先锋，各位艺术家都是中美友谊的使者。希望大家以人文交流促进心灵沟通，不断奏响中美人民相知相亲的新乐章。

First, while culture has roots, cultural exchanges know no borders.Just now, artists from both China and the United States together presented a wonderful artistic experience, complementing each other and bringing out the best in one another. While our two countries have different histories and cultures, that is no reason for estrangement, but rather an impetus to celebrate our diversity. Just as the One Voice Children’s Choir beautifully sang, “I see you, you see me”, and “the wind and tide can’t keep us”.

President Xi Jinping personally attaches great importance to China-U.S. people-to-people exchanges. Building on the “50,000 in five years” initiative, which was completed ahead of schedule, President Xi has invited 100,000 young Americans to visit China for exchanges and study in the coming five years. Shanghai plays an indispensable role in friendly engagement between China and the United States, Shanghai Media Group serves as an important bridge for China-U.S. cultural exchanges, the State of Maryland is a pioneer in bilateral subnational interactions and “pickleball diplomacy”, and all the artists are envoys of goodwill between our two countries. I encourage you to continue bridging hearts through the power of culture, and foster greater mutual understanding and affinity between our two peoples.

其二，众木成林，众志成城。一棵树在沙漠里很难存活。但赛考斯先生捐赠5万棵树苗，中国治沙人殷玉珍20多年照料，将一片沙漠变成了森林。中美两个普通人携手，变不可能为可能；如果更多人共同努力，如果中美两国相向而行，会创造怎样的奇迹？中美元首会晤达成八点成果共识，经贸团队达成一系列互惠互利新安排，两国合作展现更加光明的前景。期待美中贸易全国委员会、美中工商联合会等经贸界和各界力量行动起来，让更多合作之树落地生根，让中美合作之林广袤无垠。

Second, just as many trees make a forest, many hands will make a big difference. A single tree can hardly survive in the desert alone. But thanks to a donation from American teacher Mr. Ronald Sakolsky, which helped purchase 50,000 saplings, and the tireless care of Chinese desert control worker Ms. Yin Yuzhen over more than two decades, a once-barren desert has blossomed into a lush oasis. When two individuals from our two countries join hands, the impossible becomes possible. Just imagine: If more people come together and our two countries move in the same direction, what bigger miracles can we create?

With the eight deliverables achieved during our Presidents’ summit and a series of mutually beneficial arrangements reached between the two economic and trade teams, we are witnessing brighter prospects for China-U.S. cooperation. I hope friends from the business community, including the U.S.-China Business Council and the United States-China Association of Commerce, and all other sectors, will pitch in to help more saplings of cooperation take root, and nurture them into thriving forests.

其三，鉴往知来，笃行致远。我们所处的五月花酒店，曾是中国驻美国联络处的办公地点，见证了中美关系正常化的峥嵘岁月。五十多年来，中美关系历经风雨，给我们许多启示，其中最重要的就是中美合则两利、斗则俱伤。今年两国元首在北京和华盛顿两度会晤，同意构建基于尊重、公平、对等的中美建设性战略稳定关系。这一新定位植根厚重的历史，也指向更好的未来。让我们共同努力，把新定位的愿景转化为行动，推动两国关系迎风破浪、行稳致远。

Third, by learning from the past, we can chart the course ahead; through steadfast action, we can go far. Once housing China’s Liaison Office in the United States, the Mayflower Hotel we are in today has witnessed the historic normalization in the China-U.S. relationship. Over the past five decades and more, this relationship has gone through ups and downs, the most important inspiration from which is that, China and the United States stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation.

This year, our two Presidents have met twice in Beijing and Washington D.C., agreeing to build a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability on the basis of respect, fairness, and reciprocity. This new characterization is grounded in history, and will certainly lead to a better future.

Let us work together to translate the new vision into real action, and ensure our bilateral relationship will ride the wind and tide, and achieve steady and sustained progress.
