25城市房价环比上涨
More major cities in China saw home prices rise in June from their May levels, following recent interest rate cuts to stimulate the slowing economy, official data showed Wednesday. In June, 25 cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou recorded higher new home prices than in the previous month, a drastic leap from the May figure of 6 cities out of 70 major cities, the National Bureau of Statistics said. Twenty-one cities saw drops in new home prices last month, down from 43 in May, according to the data. It marked the first time since September 2011 for the number of cities with price rebounds to exceed the number of cities that experienced drops.
国家统计局18日公布的6月房价数据显示，70个大中城市中，新建商品住宅价格环比上涨的城市数目急剧攀升至25个，比5月份增加了19个，北京、上海和广州3大城市全部环比上涨。环比下降的城市只有21个，而这个数字在5月份为43个。此次房价反弹受国家为拉动经济下调利率影响，这也是自从去年9月以来的首次反超(环比上涨的城市数量超过环比下降的城市数量)。
Kim Jong-un becomes Marshal
金正恩被授予元帅称号
Top leader Kim Jong-un of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has been awarded the title of Marshal of the country, the official Korean Central News Agency reported Wednesday. There are 23 comparative military ranks in the country, 7 of them above “Janggwan”-level (general). “Wonsu” (Marshal) has 3 levels: Dae wonsu (Grand Marshal), Wonsu (Marshal of the DPRK) and Ch’asu (Vice-Marshal). Kim Il-sung is the only leader awarded the title of Dae wonsu in the history of DPRK.

FDA approves HIV drug
世界首款防艾药品获批
For the first time, the US Food and Drug Administration approved a drug treatment that will prevent HIV infection in healthy people, Time magazine reported. The drug, called Truvada, which is already approved for the treatment of HIV in infected patients, works by lowering the amount of virus circulating in people’s blood. But clinical trials show that it can also reduce the risk of uninfected people getting infected, if they take the drug daily before and after exposure. However, the approval is controversial. Some public health experts argue that allowing the drug to be used for prevention will foster a false sense of security among users, leading people to believe mistakenly that they are immune to the virus.

Longtime Google Inc executive Marissa Mayer’s appointment as Yahoo Inc’s new Chief Executive fits squarely into a recent pattern: “Googlers” who were recruited to lead other Internet companies, The Wall Street Journal reported. In the eyes of some Silicon Valley observers, the Yahoo pick cements Google’s reputation as a developer and launch pad for managers in the technology industry. Former Googlers either head up or help run such companies as Twitter Inc, AOL Inc and Facebook Inc.

France’s socialist government is tearing up one of the key labor market measures introduced by former center-right president Nicolas Sarkozy under his once-winning slogan: “Work more to earn more”, the Financial Times reported. The reimposition of income tax and social contributions on overtime as part of a supplementary 2012 budget will go through the socialist-controlled National Assembly this week.

Apple stores’ signature all-glass architecture is a menace to female customers who stand on the glass stairs or upstairs, after some of them have been peeped at or pictured by some snoopers using cameras or cellphones，people.com.cn reported. The idea of the all-glass design came from Apple’s late CEO Steve Jobs. Hong Kong’s Apple store has been under fire recently, while customers from Apple stores in Beijing’s Sanlitun and Xidan Joy City also said “they felt they had been secretly photographed”.

Women face scary financial penalties of an extra $849,000 over a lifetime purely for being born a woman, the Daily Mail of London reported. According to an AOL study, women face more financial challenges as they have an average of 5 years longer life expectancy, and earn less by taking more breaks from the workplace to care for children and elderly parents, and pay 30% more costly health insurance. However, women often get paid less than their male counterparts. For some occupations, men could earn $400,000 more than women over a working life.

Foreign banks saw their profits in China double in 2011, a survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) said Tuesday, xinhuanet.com reported. A total of 181 foreign banks in China reported a combined revenue growth from RMB7.78b in 2010 to RMB16.73b in 2011, according to the PwC’s annual report of foreign banks in China.

New Oriental Education & Technology Group Inc, China’s largest private education provider, lost 34% of its stock price to $14.62 Tuesday in New York, the lowest in 52 weeks, after the company said the US regulator started a probe into the structure of its Variable Interest Entities (可变利益实体), Sina Tech reported.

Jeremy Lin is officially a Houston Rocket. The New York Knicks elected not to match the 3-year, $25.1m offer sheet the point guard received from Houston, Knicks spokesman Jonathan Supranowitz confirmed Tuesday, USA Today reported. Lin was expected to fly to Houston on Wednesday to begin the process of getting his physical and being cleared to sign with the club.
