A recent survey found that 75.71% of people agree that the occupational status of parents will largely determine the occupational status of children. 16.76% of the respondents oppose this opinion and believe that striving can change fate and another 7.53% chose a vague answer: “It’s hard to say”. The survey, jointly conducted by Xiaoxiang Morning Herald and hn.qq.com, asked 3,397 people their opinions about the relevance between family background and career development.

A quirk in Brazilian election law allows candidates to use whatever name they want in campaigns, and Obama has emerged as a popular choice among politicians seeking to use high name recognition of Barack Obama to advance their own political career, CNN reported. He’s so popular in the nation that at least 16 candidates for municipal elections have adopted the name “Obama” to try to get more votes. There are plenty of “Obamas”, such as Ricardo Obama, Wilson Obama and even Barata Obama.

A group of retired US military leaders think obesity is America’s greatest threat to national security, CBS News reported. National data shows 27% of 17 to 24-year-olds in the US are too fat to serve in the military. That’s 9m potential recruits. In their new report dubbed “Too Fat to Fight”, the nonpartisan group of 100 retired generals and admirals are calling on the US government to reduce the amount of junk food available in schools in favor of healthier options.

US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has been widely mocked for questioning why windows in jet airliners don’t open, the Huffington Post reported. He made the bizarre comments at a Beverly Hills fundraising event, the day after a plane his wife was travelling on had to make an emergency landing because of an electrical fire. “When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go – and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open,” he said. “I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous.”
