CPC Congress vs corruption
18大全面部署反腐倡廉

The 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) will make overall arrangements on the fight against corruption, Cai Mingzhao, spokesman for the Congress, said Wednesday. Cai made the remarks in response to a question by a reporter from China Daily on anti-corruption work following the cases of Bo Xilai and Liu Zhijun. “The problems of Bo and Liu are serious corruption cases among leading cadres of the Party, and the lessons are profound,” Cai said. The handling of the Bo and Liu cases showed the Party’s strong resolve and distinct attitude against corruption.

Chinese advert lights up NYC

After China’s national promotional video, a publicity film of the country’s small export-oriented businesses appeared on a Times Square advertising screen in New York, drawing attention from both home and abroad, according to Nanfang Daily. This is the first self-produced promotional video of China’s small businesses which advertises them to the world. The promotional video will be playing in Times Square, known as the Crossroads of the World, for a month.

Apple challenges Android

Apple Inc told a judge in federal court in San Jose that Samsung Electronics Co’s Galaxy Note 10.1 device infringes its patents, and sought to add the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system to an existing lawsuit against Samsung in California, Bloomberg reported. This is the first time Apple has directly sued Google’s Android over alleged patent infringement.

Leonid Hmelev leapt more than 30 meters from an apartment building and died instantly. It reported that Hmelev was devastated after seeing the death of the character Itachi Uchiha . His 38-year-old father said “I always told him he spent too much time watching the TV – he didn’t know what was reality and what was fiction anymore.”

The investment in railway construction in China next year is expected to reach more than RMB516b, Economic Information Daily reported, citing sources. The investment in the construction of railways for 2011 and 2012 totaled RMB461b and RMB516b, respectively. The 12th Five-Year Plan aims to invest RMB2.3 trillion on railway construction and build about 120,000 km of railway by 2015.

Banks fight for deposits

It’s November, and the fight for deposits among banks has quietly begun, pushing up the expected yield of wealth management products as a result, Beijing Evening News reported Thursday. To enhance competitiveness, banks including China Everbright Bank, China Merchants Bank, Agricultural Bank of China and Ping An Bank have launched night markets to sell wealth management products, aiming at investors who are busy in the day. As banks are scrambling for deposits to meet the regulator’s requirement of a minimum loan-to-deposit ratio before the year-end, yields of wealth management products provided by the banks may rise back up to 5%, according to industry analysts.

The Kuomintang (KMT) Central Committee Thursday congratulated on the opening of the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) to the CPC Central Committee, Xinhua reported. In a congratulatory message, the KMT Central Committee expected the two parties to consolidate the achievements in the peaceful development of cross-Straits ties on the present basis, expand and deepen exchanges, and enhance mutual trust for the well-being of people of Chinese descent and the bright future for both sides across the Taiwan Strait.

Consumer confidence rises

China’s consumer confidence index rose to 106 points in the 3rd quarter, according to market research firm Nielsen’s latest survey, Beijing Times reported. The survey shows that the consumer confidence index was optimistic in the 3rd quarter, up by 1 point from the 2nd quarter, up by 2 points compared with same time last year, and exceeding the global average level of 92 points by 14 points.

Foxconn to train Americans

The head of Taiwan’s Foxconn Technology Group says he will invite dozens of American engineers to his factories in China to learn about manufacturing, AP reported. Terry Gou said Wednesday that he did not believe US President Barack Obama could succeed in moving production lines back to the US because Americans have outsourced those jobs for too long. But Gou says he hopes the Americans can learn how factories are run so they can return home to set up facilities with automated equipment to resolve the lack of skilled laborers.

China CPI up 1.7% in Oct

China’s consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, grew 1.7% year-on-year in October, down from the increase of 1.9% a month earlier, and marking the lowest level since January 2010, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, Xinhua reported Friday. On a month-on-month basis, October’s CPI fell 0.1% from the previous month. Food prices rose 1.8% last month from one year earlier, which was down from a 2.5% increase in September.
