Friends from the Press,

It is a great pleasure to meet with you once again. Three rounds of China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogues have already been held and each time, we ended with a joint press conference. Thank you for coming. This round of dialogue was held after President Hu Jintao paid a successful state visit to the United States in January this year and the two presidents reached important agreement on building a China-US cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit. I wish to give you the following information.

First, under the framework of the strategic dialogue, Secretary Clinton and I focused on the agreement of our presidents and had sincere, in-depth and practical dialogue and full exchange of views on how to build a China-US cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit. Our dialogue covered China-US bilateral relations and major regional and international issues. We had a good discussion. We agreed that we must act in the spirit of the China-US Joint Statement, work to increase our strategic mutual trust, enhance high-level exchanges, deepen bilateral cooperation, strengthen communication and coordination on international and regional issues, and increase cultural and people-to-people exchanges, so as to enrich the China-US cooperative partnership. We issued a list of outcomes of the strategic dialogue covering energy, the environment, science, technology, transport, forestry and climate change cooperation. We had a good discussion, but that does not mean we agreed on each and every issue. However, after each round of dialogue, we are able to expand our agreement, increase our mutual trust and enhance our cooperation, and that has added to our confidence about furthering our bilateral relations.

Second, we agreed that we need to increase strategic mutual trust and expand and deepen practical cooperation. The US side reiterated that it welcomes a strong and successful China that plays a greater role in world affairs, it respects China's core interests and it does not seek to contain or destablize China. The Chinese side emphasized that it is commited to the road of peaceful development, and it has no intension to challenge the United States. As an important step to enhance strategic mutual trust and a major outcome of this round of dialogue, we agreed to launch the China-US Strategic Security Dialogue mechanism under the strategic dialogue framework. Its first meeting was held this morning and this dialogue will continue in the future. We also talked about further promoting bilateral practical cooperation and fostering new growth points for cooperation to make the pie of our common interests bigger and more delicious.

Third, we agreed to work together in the Asia-Pacific region and build a pattern of interaction featuring mutual accommodation, benign competition and win-win cooperation. We agreed that the Pacific Ocean is vast enough to accommodate the interests of both China and the United States. We must work together with other countries in this region to uphold peace and stability and promote sustained prosperity in the Asia-Pacific, and achieve common development of all countries, so that the Pacific Ocean will forever remain worthy of its name. We agreed to launch a China-US consultation mechanism on the Asia-Pacific affairs.

Fourth, we agreed on the need to have a global perspective and jointly respond to various new problems and challenges. Recently, there have been new major developments in the international situation. As two influential countries, China and the United States need to have more communication, coordination, and cooperation to uphold and promote peace, stability and prosperity of the world.

I wish to tell the friends from the media that since its inception, the Strategic and Economic Dialogues has played an important role in enhancing our mutual trust, coordinating our policy and position, and expanding our mutually beneficial cooperation. China is ready to work with the US side to make good use of and further develop this mechanism so that it can better serve China-US cooperative partnership. As for how to make good use of this mechanism, we are open to suggestions and good ideas from the friends of the media.

To conclude, I would like to echo Vice Premier Wang Qishan in thanking Secretary Clinton and Secretary Geithner as well as both Chinese and American colleagues and staff for your hard work to ensure the success of this round of dialogue. I also wish to thank the US side for your thoughtful arrangements and thank you, friends from the media, for your interest in this dialogue. I look forward to seeing you again in Beijing next year and continue our dialogue.

Thank you.
