Asian schools jump in rank

An annual survey, which asked hundreds of international companies what universities produced the ideal young graduates, showed that Asian schools are on the increase, The New York Times reported. The most striking finding this year is the growth in the reputations of universities in China. Just outside the top 10 is Peking University, which leapt to No 11 from No 109 in just one year. This year, 4 mainland universities made the top 100, as opposed to only 2 last year.

In ranking the importance of 2nd languages, aside from English, recruiters responded that they appreciated Chinese, French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Arabic, Italian, Russian and Portuguese, in that order.

New rating system set up

Three independent rating institutions from China, the US and Russia held a joint press conference Wednesday in Beijing and initiated the establishment of a Universal Credit Rating Group, China Youth Daily reported. The move is considered to be a new challenge to the world’s current rating system. The 3 rating institutions pointed out that the current rating system “can’t shoulder the responsibility of rating any more”. The world rating system is now controlled by S&P, Moody’s and Fitch in the US, which were widely criticized during the global financial crisis.

Nike fined for China ‘fakes’

Nike has been fined RMB4.87m by the Beijing Administration for Industry and Commerce for selling sneakers in China at a higher price and of a lower standard, Beijing Evening News reported Wednesday. It is also the first time that Chinese industrial and commercial authorities have written a ticket to a company setting double standards for products in China and foreign markets.
据《北京晚报》24日报道，耐克因在产品上搞”双重标准”(在华出售的产品质量较差而价格更高)被北京市工商局处以487万元罚款，这也是工商部门针对企业”双重标准”开出的首张罚单。
Nike sells one of its high-end basketball sneakers, which it advertised with 2 air cushions below the ball and heel areas, at RMB1,299 in China, more than RMB500 higher than in foreign markets. However, under the same advertisement, the footwear sold in China only contained one air cushion. Nike has apologized and promised to refund consumers who bought the product.

ROK starts military drill

The Republic of Korea launched an annual military drill Thursday aimed at deterring military threats posed by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Yonhap News reported. The “Hoguk Exercise”, conducted from Oct 25 through Nov 2 across the country, involved 240,000 Army, Navy, Air force and Marine Corps personnel, along with police officers as they seek to improve interoperability. About 500 US soldiers are also taking part.

Chinese has become the 2nd most spoken foreign language in Canada as more than 1.11m people in the country speak Chinese including Cantonese, Mandarin or other dialects, according to the 2011 census released Wednesday by Statistics Canada.

Six series of Nong Shim noodles, produced by the South Korean Nong Shim Group, contain excessive amounts of Benzo(a) pyrene, a category one carcinogen recognized by the WHO, in their seasoning packets, local media revealed. Nong Shim Group denied the report Thursday and none of the products were recalled. The noodles are being sold in the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, both having no relevant food safety standard.

The world’s only one-star airline, Air Koryo of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), has finally joined the Internet age with an online booking service, offering flights to and from Pyongyang to Beijing and Shenyang in China as well as Vladivostok in Russia, Reuters reported. The airlines’ website says it promises “a convenient reservation…day and night”. A business class flight to Beijing was listed online at a price of $374.

A Long March-3C carrier rocket carried China’s 16th satellite for the Beidou navigation system into space Thursday from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, Xinhua reported. The geostationary satellite successfully entered a planned transfer orbit. The 16th Beidou satellite, together with the 15 satellites previously launched, will form a network capable of providing an Asia-Pacific service, planned for most parts of the region in early 2013.

The Standing Committee of the 11th National People’s Congress (NPC) announced Friday the termination of Bo Xilai’s post as the NPC deputy, Xinhua reported. The Standing Committee of Chongqing Municipal People’s Congress removed Bo from his post as the NPC deputy late last month. “According to the law on deputies to NPC and to local people’s congresses, his post was terminated,” said a statement from the NPC Standing Committee, the top legislature.

XCOR Aerospace claims its Lynx spacecraft, which is moving toward its first test flights in early 2013, can travel at a speed of 4000 km/h flying from one airport to another via outer space. Cook said that the iPhone 5 launch “will happen in December” in the Chinese mainland. Apple is using its strong retail presence in the country to drive that even further. “We are continuing to invest in our retail stores there and continue to expand with channel partners,” he said.

This little scamp is really getting into the seasonal spirit as he scares onlookers with a skull suspended on a string.
