Buoyed by government subsidies on energy-saving products and favorable policies for rural consumers, China saw home appliance sales pick up in September after a months-long slump, Xinhua reported. Sales of washing machines, air conditioners and refrigerators increased by 6.5%, 0.5% and 22%, respectively, year-on-year in September, according to data from the research center of Shanghai Securities News. A total of 5.6m washing machines were sold in September, marking a 7-year high over the corresponding period, data shows.

A British artist intends to sue the organizers of the London Olympics because he believes director Danny Boyle used his design for the opening ceremony set, UK media reported. Lee Sendall entered drawings of a spiral mound in the middle of the countryside into an arts competition held by Olympic chiefs in 2009. After not winning, he thought no more of it until he saw the opening ceremony in July this year. Sendall noticed that the spiral-shaped, verdant hill that formed the centerpiece of the event looked remarkably similar to his drawings.

Statistics from Centaline Property and Homelink Real Estate both show that home sales in the city hit 13,527 units (7,118 new homes and 6,409 2nd-hand homes) in the first half of November, a 110.9% increase compared with the first half of October.

According to an expert, liquor transport and packaging, not liquor production, involves plastic materials. Plasticizers will pose a health threat to the human reproductive, immune and digestive systems.

Liquor plasticizers ‘normal’

It is normal practice for Chinese liquor makers to add plasticizers, with high-end products containing much higher amounts than the lower-end, according to a notice issued Monday night by the China Alcoholic Drinks Association, Beijing News reported. The standard on the quantity of plasticizers allowed in liquor is being drafted. The notice adds that it is irresponsible for media to jump conclusions that certain liquor products contain plasticizers higher than permitted amounts before they have sound evidence to support their claims.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard last month released a white paper entitled Australia in the Asian Century. But the Chinese (simplified) version of the paper was poorly translated. It contained broken sentences, grammar and syntax errors, inappropriate vocabulary and incomprehensible expressions, leading many to question how it was prepared. One critic said it looked like the job was done using the Google Translate website, the Daily Telegraph of Sydney reported.
