中央政府近日成立新机构 "国家互联网信息办公室" ，负责监管全球规模最大的内地互联网市场。

国务院昨天宣布，新机构将在中宣部、工业和信息化部及公安部等部门帮助下，负责加强互联网信息内容管理，以及网络新闻及其它相关服务的日常监管。

互联网信息办公室主任将由国务院新闻办公室主任王晨兼任。国务院新闻办公室副主任钱小芊、工业和信息化部副部长奚国华以及公安部副部长张新枫任办公室副主任。

据新华社报道，该机构将负责新闻网站的规划建设和协调、查处违规网站及指导技术服务提供商，并将监管网络游戏、网络视频和电子出版等服务。

之前，内地互联网行业是由国务院新闻办下属一个局等多个部委共同监管。新成立的互联网办公室职责和职能高度集中，监控互联网的权力更大。

Beijing sets up new body to oversee web content

The central government has created a new state agency to oversee the world's largest internet market.

The State Council said yesterday that the new State Internet Information Office, with resources pooled from the propaganda, industry and information technology and public security departments, would be responsible for strengthening management of internet content and handling day-to-day regulation of news and related services.

The new agency is headed by Wang Chen , who is also director of State Council Information Office (SCIO). His deputies will be SCIO deputy director Qian Qiaoqian, Deputy Industry and Information Technology Minister Xi Guohua and Deputy Public Security Minister Zhang Xinfeng.

It will oversee the development and co-ordination of news portals, penalise offending web services and extend guidance to providers of technological services. It will also monitor online game, video and e-publishing services, Xinhua reported.

Various ministries, as well as a bureau under SCIO, were responsible for regulating the booming internet sector previously. The new state internet office, headed by a ministerial-level official, centralises the responsibilities and functions. It also has more power to exercise control over the internet because of its enhanced status.
